History of NAGW

The desire to communicate and learn with fellow web professionals in other city and county governments is nothing new.

History

NAGW had its beginnings in 2003, when a Kansas City group called the Metro Area Government Webmasters (MAGWeb) decided to sponsor a national conference for their peers.

This first Government Webmasters Conference drew more than 200 attendees from 29 states. Buoyed by that success, MAGWeb held a second conference in 2004, which attracted even greater attendance. Conference planners then decided to pass the baton and turned the conference over to a new hosting city, Denver, in 2005.

Some of the same people who planned the Kansas City and Denver conferences formed NAGW. The association officially came into being at the Denver conference in September 2005 and elected its first officers.

We formally incorporated on January 1, 2006. NAGW Inc. was granted status as a 501(c)(6) non-profit corporation on August 20, 2006. As such, NAGW is exempt from income taxes. However, contributions or gifts to NAGW are not deductible as charitable contributions for Federal income tax purposes.

The National Association of Government Webmasters merges the combined efforts of regional groups into one strong voice.

What is the National Association of Government Webmasters (NAGW)?

We are an association of local government Webmasters working together to share knowledge, ideas, and other resources. We collaborate on technologies and network with other professionals to improve our capacity to provide our value across the web to our communities.

What is the mission of NAGW?

NAGW is geared specifically to the interests and concerns of local government webmasters. The organization provides a way for these webmasters to share knowledge, ideas and resources, and a way to meet and network with other who have similar positions.

Our mission is primarily to serve our membership through the coordination of national conferences, enabling the networking of association members, and sharing other professional resources and information. The result, we hope, will be to improve our capacity to provide value across the Web to our communities.

Who can join NAGW?

To be eligible for membership in the Association, an applicant must be considered a full- or part-time employee of a qualifying local government entity as defined in Article IX, Section 6, and receive an annual W2 statement from that agency. Unpaid volunteers who manage or regularly update the web site for a qualifying local government entity will be considered by the Board for membership on a case-by-case basis.
